I work within the healing framework. Ceramics is the most recent manifestation of a portfolio career involving work with a variety of medical charities and the wider community and I have used the ceramic process as a personal therapeutic journey following being involved in a major accident in 2004. I enjoy the diversity of qualities possible with clay and utilize both its raw and fired states.
I often use a peripatetic approach as a starting point in my work, and this latest body of work started with trip to Coventry that revealed a conversation about how family carers felt about what they did. I worked by facilitating drawing workshops with the Princess Royal Trust – Coventry Carers’ Centre, as part of their programme of bi-weekly meetings for carers of Asian origin. I then used this artwork in combination with my own to create surface designs for selected tableware using a variety of ceramic processes.
These behaviours have a unique ability to act locally as a mechanism for community placemaking. They further inform my own conversation with space and the rituals used to enhance the lived experience
